The Most Dangerous Cities in America

Neighborhood Scout is out with their list of the 100 most dangerous cities in America. The research reveals the 100 most dangerous cities in America with a population of over 25,000 and the cities are ranked based on violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Violet crimes include homicides, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. 

The research includes crimes reported by all agencies operating in the cities. 

We’ll do a countdown to what has been named the most dangerous city in America. So let’s start with 

 

10. South Bend, Indiana 

South Bend is a city on the St. Joseph River in Indiana. This city was established in 1865 and the population currently stands at around 102,000.  In South Bend, your chances of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is one in 19. In Indiana alone, 99% of the communities have a lower crime rate than South Bend. Looking at violent crime separately, your chances of being a victim of violent offenses like rape, murder, armed robbery, or other types of assault are one in 59. 

South Bend also has one of the highest rates of motor vehicle theft in the nation. 

 

9. Albany, Georgia 

Albany is a city located in southwest Georgia. The city has a population of 73,400. Albany became prominent in the nineteenth century as a shipping and market center. The city received military investment during WWII, which helped develop the region. Albany was also a prominent city during the civil rights era. 

Now let’s look at the crime rate in Albany. Your chances of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 16. Your chances of becoming a victim of just violent crime is one in 56. For property crime, the rate is one in 22, which is a rate of 45 per one thousand residents.

8. Little Rock, Arkansas 

Little Rock is the capital city of Arkansas and the most populous city in the state with 202,000 residents. The city got its name from a rock formation by the river and was incorporated in 1831. Little Rock is home to the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, the Arkansas Repertory Theater, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center.  

Looking at the stats, Little Rock has a crime rate of 66 per one thousand residents. Your chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is one in 15. For violent crimes alone, your chances are 1 in 55. For property crimes, the rate is one in 21, which is a rate of 48 per one thousand residents. 

 

7. Pine Bluff, Arkansas 

Pine Bluff is the tenth largest city in Arkansas with a population of a little over 40,000 residents. The city is located in the Southeast section of the Arkansas Delta. 

The crime rate here is 66 per one thousand residents. Your chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is one in 15. Just like Little Rock, your chances of becoming a victim of just violent crime here is 1 in 55. For property crimes, the rate jumps to one in 21, which is a rate of 48 per one thousand residents. 

 

6. Alexandria, Louisiana 

Alexandria is the ninth largest city in the state of Louisiana with a population of 47,000 residents. Located along the Red River, Alexandria was incorporated as a town in 1818 and received a city charter in 1832. 

The crime rate in Alexandria is 92 per one thousand residents. Your chances of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in the city is one in 11. For violent crime alone, the rate is 1 in 53 while the rate for property crime is one in 14. 

 

5. St. Louis, Missouri 

St. Louis is the second largest city in Missouri and has a population of a little over 300,000. The city was founded in 1764 by French fur traders. The city was sold to the United States by France as part of the Louisiana Purchase. 

The crime rate in St. Louis is 78 per one thousand residents. Your chances of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is one in just 13! For violent crime alone, the rate is 1 in 50 while the rate for property crime is one in 17, which is a rate of 58 per one thousand population. 

 

4. Detroit, Michigan 

Detroit is the largest city in Michigan. It is a historic city with a current population of 674,000. It is of course known for its ties to the auto industry and being the birthplace of Motown Records. In recent decades, however, Detroit has gone through a massive decline and several financial issues. 

The crime rate in this city is 56 per one thousand residents. Your chances of becoming a victim of either violent or property crimes is one in 18. For violent crimes alone, the rate is 1in 44. The chances of becoming a victim of property crime is one in 30, which is a rate of 33 per one thousand residents. 

 

3. Saginaw, Michigan

Saginaw is a city located in the area known as Mid-Michigan. The city has a population of about 44,000 residents and was a thriving lumber town in the 19th century. However, during the late 20th century, its industry declined, which led to increased unemployment, population loss, and a rise in crime. 

The crime rate in Saginaw is 41 per one thousand residents. Your chances of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is 1 in 25. For violent crimes alone, the rate is 1 in 42. The rate for property crime is 1 in 17. 

 

2. Memphis, Tennessee 

Located on the Mississippi river in southwest Tennessee, Memphis is known for blues, soul, and rock and roll. The population of the city is currently 650,000 and it has landed as the second most dangerous city in America. That is due to the crime rate of 82 per one thousand residents. 

Your chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Memphis is an astonishing 1 in 12! For violent crime alone, the rate is 1 in 41. The rate for property crime is 1 in 17, which is a rate of 58 per one thousand residents. 

 

1.  Monroe, Louisiana 

Monroe is a city located in northern Louisiana. It is the eighth largest city in the state with a population of 47,000 residents. Monroe is home to the Biedenham Museum and Gardens, Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, and the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum.   

The crime rate in Monroe is 90 per one thousand residents. Your chances of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is just 1 in 11! For violent crimes alone, your chances of becoming a victim is 1 in 34! For property crime, the rate is 1 in 16, which is a rate of 61 per one thousand residents.
