Sundown towns are dark and painful
0:02
Legacy of American History places where
0:04
African-Americans and other minority
0:06
groups were systematically excluded from
0:08
living working or even being present
0:10
after Sunset these towns often found
0:13
across the United States enforc
0:15
segregation through intimidation
0:16
violence and discriminatory policies
0:19
driving black residents out and ensuring
0:21
that African-Americans were not welcome
0:23
in their communities after dark Sundown
0:26
towns were more than just Geographic
0:27
locations they represented a system
0:30
racial exclusion that reinforced white
0:32
supremacy and contributed to Decades of
0:34
systematic racism Sundown towns began to
0:37
emerge in the late 19th and 20th
0:39
centuries a time when Jim Crow laws were
0:41
spreading across the South and similar
0:43
forms of racial exclusion were taking
0:46
root in other regions these towns used a
0:48
combination of formal policies social
0:50
pressures and sometimes outright
0:52
violence to drive black residents away
0:54
in many cases black Americans were told
0:56
they had to leave town before Sundown or
0:59
risk facing harassment job loss physical
1:02
violence or even lynching these towns
1:04
existed across the Midwest and north and
1:06
even parts of the west where racial
1:08
discrimination had less overt legal
1:10
backing than in the South though many
1:12
Sundown towns have since dropped such
1:14
policies officially their legacy remains
1:17
embedded in the social dynamics racial
1:19
divides and Community structures that
1:21
persist today the Midwest where a lot of
1:24
my family was from was home to some of
1:26
the most notorious Sundown towns in
1:28
America places like Illinois Indiana
1:30
Ohio and Michigan were known for
1:32
enforcing exclusionary practices against
1:35
African-Americans the crazy thing is
1:37
that these cities were everywhere I mean
1:39
even I was shocked by how prevalent
1:41
these towns were because you hear about
1:43
this town was A Sundown town or maybe
1:45
that town was A Sundown town and assume
1:48
that these were not that common nope
1:50
very common blacks couldn't go outside
1:52
after dark in a lot of cities Across
1:55
America and obviously we don't have time
1:57
to go through all of the Sundown towns
1:59
in America but let's just look at some
2:01
of them starting in the midwest cisero
2:04
Illinois right down the street from my
2:06
grandparents house Cicero became known
2:09
for its aggressive anti-black policies
2:11
in the early 20th century
2:13
African-American families who attempted
2:14
to move into the town were met with
2:16
hostility intimidation and even violence
2:19
in 1951 a race riot broke out in Cicero
2:22
where a mob of thousands of white people
2:25
violently protested a black bus driver's
2:27
family just for moving into the city of
2:30
course they allow black people to work
2:31
in the city but not live in the city as
2:34
late as 1966 I mean imagine how recent
2:37
that is until
2:39
1966 people could work in the city but
2:42
they couldn't live there in the city of
2:44
aora Indiana they actually had a sign
2:46
that read inward don't let the sun set
2:48
on you in Aurora that sign was removed
2:51
before 1937 Dearborn Michigan had an
2:54
outspoken supporter of segregation as a
2:57
mayor from 1942 to 197 78 Lacrosse
3:01
Wisconsin waited all the way till 2016
3:04
to apologize for its Town's history of
3:07
Being A Sundown Town Maran Ohio home of
3:10
the US president Warren G Harding
3:12
enacted a policy to remove its black
3:14
population in 1920 I mean Sullivan
3:17
Missouri was practically A Sundown town
3:19
until 1990 it had a Sundown Town sign
3:23
warning black people against being
3:24
present in town after dark as late as
3:27
1990 while Missouri is 12 % black
3:30
Sullivan is .2% black not even a percent
3:34
somebody needs to figure out who the
3:36
black person is that they allowed in the
3:38
city the KKK actually held a rally in
3:41
the Sullivan area as protest broke out
3:43
in Ferguson Missouri in response to the
3:45
police shooting of Michael Brown now
3:48
let's go down south in many parts of the
3:50
Borderlands of the South and Midwest
3:52
such as in Oklahoma Sundown towns Thrive
3:55
through violence and social control
3:57
towns like Durant Edmund nor Blackwell
4:00
and Aiden in Oklahoma had Sundown signs
4:03
warning black people to not even be
4:05
present after sunset or had rules
4:08
against black people owning property
4:10
there VOR Texas had an all-white
4:12
population until a judge desegregated
4:15
its public housing project in 1993 and I
4:18
bet you thought most black people were
4:20
just not allowed in but black residents
4:23
were actually expelled from the town 70
4:25
years prior to that and the town was a
4:27
KKK stronghold other towns in in Texas
4:30
like Elmo and even a whole County like
4:32
kamanche County expelled black residents
4:35
and kept them out for decades you have
4:37
your nerve naming a town kamanche and
4:40
then kicking out brown residents you
4:42
know what I've never understood I think
4:44
United States and maybe if you're from
4:46
another country you could write it in
4:47
the comments is United States the only
4:50
country who conquers a group of people
4:52
and then names streets after them and
4:55
can you tell me why they do this it
4:57
doesn't make any sense you kill Millions
4:59
of Indians and then you name high
5:01
schools after them whole towns after
5:04
them can someone tell me why or do they
5:06
do this anywhere else did the Romans
5:08
conquer like I don't know who the Romans
5:10
conquered but did they name streets and
5:13
signs after them after they were done
5:15
isn't this kind of Twisted in the head
5:17
leave a comment let me know what you
5:18
think Arab Alabama good old Arab did not
5:23
allow black people after or before
5:25
Sunset and had signs warning about that
5:28
just the day like the whole day if you
5:30
can't be there after sunset or Before
5:33
Sunset so that just means don't come in
5:35
they should have just had a sign saying
5:37
don't come in Bonanza Arkansas I had
5:40
family members that love the show
5:41
Bonanza did you have family members that
5:43
love the show Bonanza anyway bananza
5:46
Arkansas violently removed almost all
5:48
black residents in 1904 by shooting as
5:51
much as 500 gunshots into black homes
5:54
Harrison Arkansas was home to two race
5:56
riots in the early 1900s and and a
5:59
notorious Sundown Town aoy Florida had
6:02
to issue a formal proclamation in
6:05
2018 that it was no longer a Sundown
6:08
town are we understanding like are we
6:10
hearing this correctly they had to issue
6:12
a formal proclamation in just 2018 of
6:16
course there's no surprise that this was
6:18
the site of a 1920 Massacre that nearly
6:20
wiped out all of its black population
6:23
incoming Georgia a group of men dubbed
6:25
Night Riders terrorized and drove away
6:27
black residents and even threatened
6:29
white Farmers that hired black help on
6:31
their farms and on to the West did you
6:34
know that the world famous Beverly Hills
6:37
was planned to be an all-white suburb
6:39
Glendale California Was A Sundown town
6:42
until the 1960s the city council passed
6:45
a resolution in 2020 that formerly
6:48
apologized for its history even the city
6:50
of Hawthorne had a sign in the 1930s
6:53
that read inward don't let the sunset on
6:56
you and Hawthorne were they just passing
6:58
out these signs did they just give them
7:00
out like when you start a city would you
7:02
like your inward don't let the sunset on
7:05
you in this city or that City now
7:08
Hawthorne is almost 25% black tempy
7:11
Arizona was once a Sundown town I didn't
7:14
even know the sun goes down in Arizona
7:15
it's so freaking hot the city allowed
7:17
black people to work there but not to
7:19
live there from its founding in 1871
7:22
until again in the 1960s Medford Oregon
7:26
was considered a Sundown town before 19
7:29
1963 the impact of Sundown towns extends
7:33
far beyond the land they occupy these
7:35
towns were responsible for years of
7:37
racial exclusion violence and social
7:40
control leaving behind Community shaped
7:42
by segregation and distrust black
7:44
families who had lived in these towns
7:46
were displaced forced to find homes in
7:48
areas where they could live and work
7:49
without fear of persecution today some
7:52
of these towns have moved towards
7:54
integration but the scars of segregation
7:56
of course remain even today many black
7:58
Travelers are CAU cous about avoiding
8:00
these Sundown towns if you made it all
