Today we're going to talk about crime
0:01
rates because I think America's cities
0:03
are about to get 10 times worse. Across
0:05
the United States, crime remains a
0:07
pressing issue, particularly in the
0:09
urban areas struggling with economic
0:11
disparities, systematic issues, and gang
0:13
violence. Among these cities, some of
0:15
the most dangerous also have large black
0:17
populations. Facing the unique
0:19
challenges that come with historical and
0:21
social inequities. Based on recent crime
0:23
reports, here are the 10 most dangerous
0:25
cities in America with at least a 20%
0:28
black population. ranked from number 10
0:30
to number one. Hi, my name is Jared and
0:32
welcome to Black Excellence. This is a
0:34
show where we talk about how black
0:36
people live in America with some nodes
0:38
to noteworthy moments in black history.
0:40
Some of these cities we have talked
0:42
about before as some of the worst cities
0:44
for black people to live in. But those
0:46
videos we have done were overall
0:47
rankings which include economic
0:49
performance. This list is purely about
0:52
crime rates. At number 10, we have
0:54
Oakland, California. Oakland, nestled in
0:57
the Bay Area, has long been a city of
1:00
contrast, known for its rich cultural
1:02
history and vibrant art scene, but also
1:04
for its persistent struggles with crime.
1:07
In 2023, Oakland reported a crime rate
1:10
of
1:11
6,459 per 100,000 residents, making it
1:15
175% higher than the national average.
1:18
The city saw
1:20
5,714 violent crimes, including 103
1:24
homicides,
1:26
2,515 robberies, and
1:28
2,730 aggravated assaults. Gang
1:31
activity, drugrelated crimes, and
1:33
economic struggles continue to plague
1:35
parts of the city, particularly in
1:37
neighborhoods like East Oakland. Oakland
1:39
has a population of
1:42
433,823 people, of which 23% are black.
1:46
At number nine, we have Cleveland, Ohio.
1:48
Cleveland, historically a hub of
1:50
industry and culture, has been hit hard
1:52
by economic decline for decades. The
1:55
city's violent crime rate remains
1:57
alarmingly high with
1:59
7,292 violent crime incidents reported
2:03
last year. Property crime is also a
2:04
major issue with rates 201% higher than
2:08
the national average. High unemployment,
2:11
abandoned properties, and ongoing gang
2:13
violence contribute to the city's
2:15
struggles, particularly in neighborhoods
2:17
like Kinsman and Mount Pleasant. 48% of
2:20
Cleveland's
2:23
372,624 population is black. At number
2:26
eight, we have Kansas City, Missouri.
2:28
While Kansas City is famous for its
2:30
barbecue and jazz heritage, it's also
2:32
one of the most dangerous cities in
2:34
America. In 2023 alone, the city reached
2:37
a record-breaking 176 homicides. The
2:41
violent crime rate sits at
2:44
1,833.4 per 100,000 residents, fueled by
2:48
gang violence, drugrelated crimes, and
2:50
economic instability. Areas like the
2:52
east side remain particularly
2:54
high-risisk zones. Kansas City has a
2:56
population of
2:58
58,090 people and is 30% black. At
3:01
number seven, we have Little Rock,
3:03
Arkansas. Despite its modest size of
3:07
202,591 people, Little Rock has a crime
3:10
rate that rivals much larger cities. The
3:12
city recorded
3:13
1,517 violent crimes per 100,000
3:16
residents with aggravated assault rates
3:19
nearly five times the national average.
3:21
Gang presence and drugrelated violence
3:23
remain ongoing issues. In certain areas
3:26
such as southwest Little Rock, crime is
3:28
a daily reality that impacts residents
3:30
quality of life. About 42% of Little
3:34
Rock is black. At number six, we have
3:36
the home of Little Wayne, New Orleans,
3:38
Louisiana. The block is hot. The block
3:40
is hot. Don't ever do that again. New
3:42
Orleans, with its worldrenowned music,
3:44
food, and history, also carries a dark
3:47
side. The city's crime rate is
3:49
5,864 per 100,000 people, 150% above the
3:55
national average. In 2023, the city
3:57
recorded 201 murders,
4:00
1,16 robberies, and 3,200 aggravated
4:04
assaults. Certain neighborhoods,
4:06
including Central City and the Lower 9th
4:08
Ward, have high levels of violence and
4:10
poverty, making crime prevention a
4:13
continual challenge. Black people make
4:15
up almost 60% of New Orleans, which has
4:17
a population of
4:21
376,971 people. Side note, leave a
4:23
comment if you think Little Wayne got
4:24
robbed for this year's Super Bowl, which
4:27
was held in New Orleans. At number five,
4:29
we have Baltimore, Maryland. If I hear
4:32
about Baltimore, Maryland one more time
4:34
on my list of either one of the greatest
4:37
places for blacks to live or one of the
4:38
worst places for blacks to live, I'm
4:40
going to have to just go there because
4:42
this place makes no freaking sense to
4:44
me. And if someone in the comments can
4:45
explain what's going on in Baltimore,
4:47
Maryland, I would really appreciate it.
4:49
Like I was saying, Baltimore, Maryland
4:51
is often associated with its rich black
4:54
heritage and contributions to American
4:57
history, but it also grapples with one
4:59
of the highest violent crime rates in
5:01
the country. With
5:03
1,859 violent crimes per 100,000 people,
5:07
the city remains dangerous, particularly
5:09
in West Baltimore, where gang violence
5:11
and drugrelated crime dominate. In 2019,
5:15
there were 348 homicides, a stark
5:18
reflection of the city's struggles with
5:20
law enforcement and economic
5:22
disparities. 62% of Baltimore's
5:27
567,498 population is black. And number
5:30
four, we have the home of Mottown,
5:32
Detroit, Michigan. Very few cities are
5:35
as meaningful to black culture in
5:37
America as Detroit, which is currently
5:39
78% black. Once a booming center for the
5:42
automotive industry and chart topping
5:44
music, Detroit has faced decades of
5:46
economic decline and high crime rates,
5:49
the city's violent crime rate stands at
5:52
1,965 per 100,000 residents with 275
5:57
homicides reported in 2019 alone. Areas
6:01
like Breitmore and the East Side
6:02
continue to be some of the most
6:04
dangerous neighborhoods in the country.
6:06
At number three, we have Jackson,
6:07
Mississippi. Jackson holds the
6:09
unfortunate distinction of having the
6:12
highest homicide rate in America with
6:15
78.8 murders per 100,000 residents in
6:19
2023. The city reported 118 homicides
6:22
making violent crime one of the biggest
6:24
challenges. Economic issues, underfunded
6:27
public services, and deep-seated
6:29
inequity contribute to the rampid crime
6:32
in neighborhoods like Washington Edition
6:34
and Presidential Hills. Jackson is the
6:36
blackest city on this list with 82% of
6:39
its
6:41
153,71 population being black. At number
6:44
two, we have St. Louis, Missouri. We
6:47
recently did a video on St. Louis being
6:49
the most dangerous place in America for
6:51
black women. And no surprise, it is
6:53
number two for the most dangerous place
6:55
overall for black people in America. St.
6:58
Louis has a population of
7:01
293,310 and 45% are black. With a
7:04
violent crime rate of
7:06
1,927 per 100,000 residents and 194
7:11
homicides, the city's crime problem
7:13
remains severe. Areas like Wells,
7:16
Goodfellow, and College Hill experience
7:18
high levels of violence driven by gang
7:20
activity, poverty, and of course,
7:23
limited economic opportunities. And at
7:26
number one, we have Memphis, Tennessee.
7:28
Topping the list is Memphis, Tennessee,
7:30
where the crime rates continue to soar.
7:32
The city's total crime rate is
7:35
317% higher than the national average
7:38
with a staggering
7:41
9,764 crimes per 100,000 residents. In
7:45
2023, Memphis recorded 341 murders,
7:50
1,957 robberies, and
7:53
12,741 aggravated assaults. North and
7:56
South Memphis, in particular, remain
7:59
some of the most dangerous areas in the
8:01
country. Factors such as economic
8:03
hardships, gang violence, and a strained
8:06
police force have made crime a
8:08
persistent issue. Memphis has a sizable
8:10
population of
8:13
628,127 people and 64% are black. And if
